Five years ago, a new idea took root in London, Ontario: what if people of all abilities could live together, not just as neighbours, but as a true community?
That idea became Clarke Road, an intentional community where individuals supported by PHSS share their lives with other tenants in a vibrant, family-like setting. Today, Clarke Road stands as a living example of what’s possible when inclusion, independence, and compassion come together under one roof.
A Place That Feels Like Family
From the very beginning, Clarke Road was built on the values of family and connection. Residents describe the experience as “like having a bunch of brothers and sisters all in the building all the time.”
Every day brings opportunities to share meals, plan activities, and discover common interests. Friendships have blossomed naturally, and the building has become more than a residence, it has become a home filled with belonging, laughter, and support.
Independence With Support
For many individuals with disabilities, Clarke Road offers something deeply meaningful: greater independence. With the right supports in place, tenants can shape their own daily lives while knowing they are surrounded by people who care.
As one resident shared: “More independence. More independence. More independence.” That spirit of autonomy and dignity lies at the heart of the Clarke Road model.
Peace of Mind for Families
For parents and caregivers, there is often a lifelong worry: “What will happen when I’m no longer able to care for my child?” Clarke Road provides an answer, a safe and supportive community where loved ones are not only cared for, but also thrive in meaningful relationships.
A Model for the Future
The success of Clarke Road demonstrates the power of intentional communities to change lives. It shows that people of all abilities can flourish together, creating bonds that uplift everyone involved.
But as residents and staff remind us, the need is great. There is tremendous demand for more communities like Clarke Road; across London, across Ontario, and beyond.
This is just the beginning. Clarke Road is proof that when we build with inclusion at the centre, we don’t just create housing, we create family.
